Ethel (O’Connor) Hagen |
We were the Elgin Unit of District 8, which was composed of London-Middlesex, Oxford, Lambton and Elgin. Allan Harrington and Gren Vogan broached the idea of men retired teachers joining with the Elgin Unit of the O.A.S.W.T in 1970 and a joint meeting was first held in 1971.

Gordon McBride |
We now had 157 members (we had 40 in the first year). The organization was known as the STO (Superannuated Teachers of Ontario). Mr. McBride was also President of District 8 in 1974.

Marguerite Roberts |
Sixty-Eight percent of retired teachers were getting less than $5000 per year in pension. A mail strike prevented the Annual Meeting and Ms. Roberts stayed on for another year.

Mr. Trevithick was Principal of both St. Thomas Collegiate Institute and the new Central Elgin Collegiate Institute at the same time when CECI was first opened.

Mr. Phoenix taught in a flying school in Ethiopia before teaching in Aylmer. He was also President of District 8 (of which Elgin was one Unit) in 1982-1983.

Marion Orchard |
Ms. Orchard was a teacher for 37 years and was President on two separate years _ one as President of Elgin Unit of District 8 (London) and one as President of District 37 (Oxford-Elgin).

Marion N. Penhale |
Ms. Penhale taught student nurses at Victoria Hospital before teaching in Hamilton and York and then Elgin.

Helen Carter |
Ms. Carter taught at Arthur Voaden and Parkside. She was also Vice-President of District 8 in 1986 and was involved with the three way division which took place during this time.

Helen Munroe |
Ms. Munroe received a Governor-General’s Medal in 1993. At the end of her year as President, District 8 9London), voted to split, thereby forming District 37, Oxford-Elgin.

Ms. Armour was instrumental in forming the new District 37 Oxford-Elgin and was its first President.

Doris McNaughton |
Ms. McNaughton was one of the “train kids” who rode the Wabash daily to Glencoe High School. She served many positions in District 37 executive.

Ms. Orchard’s second Presidency saw membership increase.

William F.M. Haight |
Mr. Haight went to Aylmer High School and on to be a research associate at Queen’s University. He then taught 30 years at Central Elgin Collegiate in St. Thomas. He was also on the UWO Senate, and was a strong advocate of life membership in the Retired Teachers’ Organization.

Mr. Wilkinson established and edited the first District 41 Newsletter and has attended 8 Senates in a row!! Mr. Wilkinson also served on the Provincial Membership Committee.

David White |
Mr. White was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Elgin County Outdoor Education Center near Jaffa. He grew up at Springwater (White’s Pond) near Aylmer.

Ms. Sherratt was also very active in the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers and was the Elgin president of the organization in 1997-1998.

Mr. Prince was principal at West Elgin Secondary School from 1976 to 1994. Mr. Prince was appointed to the Provincial Membership Committee in 1997.

Carole Anne Spenard |
Carole Anne worked in the Separate School system at Assumption School in Aylmer where she lived.

Janet Wilkinson |
Janet graduated from Alma College in St. Thomas, taught mainly in the primary division and later became a trustee for the Elgin County Board of Education. She and Cyril make the first husband/wife combination to serve as president.

Mr. Hamilton hails from England and taught mainly at West Elgin Secondary School and Central Elgin Collegiate until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Quenneville spent many years on the OECTA executive.

Ms. Watson also served for many years as the secretary and is currently a Vice-President of the Provincial RWTAO.

Mr. McIntyre hosted the District 41 Annual Golf Tournament and Dinner.

Deb Rosebrugh |
Deb expanded the executive to include non teachers. She actively recruited these members to join the executive. When no one came forward to accept the President’s position she continued in the role. Deb remained on the executive as travel chair.

Diane Herter |
Diane led the district during the COVID pandemic. She convened many “Zoom” meetings to keep the executive active and engaged as in person meetings were not allowed.

John Laverty |
John led the executive post pandemic and continued with online meetings and transitioning in person meetings again. He was instrumental in establishing RTO as a volunteer group at the mass vaccination center. He received a provincial award for his efforts.
